Paola Castrogiovanni

Associate Professor of Histology [BIO/17]

Currently she works at the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences (BIOMETEC), Anatomy, Histology and Movement Sciences Section, University of Catania, Italy.

  • In 1988 she graduated in Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Catania discussing an experimental thesis on the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) prepared at the Institute of Microbiology during a period of internship (from 1986 to 1988).
  • In 1989 she qualified as a biologist.
  • In 2004 she obtained the Ph.D. in Medical Embryology, Pathology and Experimental Hematology (XV cycle), discussing the thesis entitled "Food lipids and atherosclerosis risk. An experimental study in the mouse at rest and subjected to exercise ".
  • From 2004 to 2019 she was a permanent Researcher (RU) for the SSD BIO / 17- Histology.
  • Since 2004 she has held teaching positions in Histology and Embryology in the Degree Courses in Medicine and Surgery, Motory Sciences, Physiotherapy, Logopedics, Orthoptics and Ophthalmologic Assistance, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technique, Dietetics, Audioprosthetic Techniques, Biomedical Laboratory Techniques, Techniques of Neurophysiopathology, Techniques of Medical Radiology for Imaging and Radiotherapy, Nursing, Nursing and Obstetric Sciences; in the Master's Degree Course in Medical Biotechnology; in the School of Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology; in a professional training course in Structural Osteopathy; in the School of Specialization in Clinical Pathology, teaching Techniques of Optical and Electronic Microscopy; in the II level Master "Reproductive Biology and Biotechnology", teaching Human Embryology.
  • From 2006 to 2008, she was member of teaching staff of the PhD in “Technological, immunological and immunogenetical sperimentation: its application in xenotransplantations and in organ removals for human transplantation”, University of Catania.
  • In 2017 she acquired the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the role of Professor II Level, in the SSD BIO/17.
  • Since 2020 she is Associate Professor for the SSD BIO / 17- Histology.

She is author and/or co-author of several scientific publications, in international scientific journals indexed in different biomedical areas. Her research activity is mainly focused on the immuno-histochemical/cytochemical study of molecules and growth factors involved in the physical activity associated with diet, in various pathologies of the musculoskeletal system and of the cardiovascular system, as well as in some mechanisms of embryonic development.

  • Studies on the effects of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) of various geographical origin in the Mediterranean diet, associated or not with physical activity, on the musculoskeletal system of osteoarthritis animal models.
  • Studies on effects of different dietary profiles (Western and/or Mediterranean diet) and vitamin D on molecular morphology and histomorphometric analysis of skeletal muscle fibers.
  • Studies on effects of exhaustive physical exercise and diet enriched by extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on oxidative stress in muscle tissue.
