Michelino Daniele Antonio Di Rosa
Michelino Di Rosa, Biologist, PhD, researcher in Histology at the University of Catania. He graduated in Molecular Biology at the Institute of General Pathology with the team of Prof. Lucia Malaguarnera, treating as topics "Innate immunity and related diseases". He had an internship at the Sbarro Institute Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine in Philadelphia (USA), with the team of Eva Surmacz and Antonio Giordano, dealing with the "Role of Leptin in the development of breast cancer". He worked had a postdoctoral fellow in the Infectious Diseases Division, Department of Clinical and Molecular Biomedicine, University of Catania, collaborating with prof. Giuseppe Nunnari, focusing his studies on the “Role of Innate Immunity and Infection from HIV virus ”. He spent a period of internship at the Laboratory of Clinical Neurochemistry, Institute of Neurosciences and Physiology, University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden with Prof.re Henrik Zetterberg and Prof.re Kaj Blennow concerning "the identification of new biomarkers of innate immunity in Alzheimer's disease "with a special focus on the analysis of chitinase in the cerebrospinal fluid. He is currently working on the role of Innate Immunity in neuro-degenerative diseases.
The research activity regards at the "paroxysm" of the immune response mediated by monocytes/macrophages and by the monocyte-derived-cells (osteoclasts, microglia, dendritic cells, M1, M2a, M2b, M2c, M4, and Kupffer cells) ( MCs). Within the immune phenomena mediated by MCs, attention is paid to the Chitinase gene family, the OAS genes and the Vitamin D3 pathways. The physiopathological phenomena studied are:
- Activation of chitinases in osteoclasts during "bone remodeling"
- The role of chitinase-like protein in the central nervous system (CNS) and in neurodegenerative diseases
- The action carried out by Vitamin D3 as immuno-modulator in MCs
- Modulation of OAS genes by RNA virus (HIV-1 es) in MCs
Studies rely not only on cellular and molecular biology techniques but also with the support of bioinformatics and computational analysis.
