Born in Modica (Rg) Italy, March 16, 1950. 1973 Degree in School of Pharmacy (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Catania (Italy).

1974 - 1980 Grant for Scientific-Teaching at Institute of Microbiology, School of Farmacy University of Catania (Italy).
1976 Fellowship of European Council at the Department of Bacteriology-University of Bristol (U.K.).
1979 Specialization in Microbiology. Faculty of Medicine University “La Sapienza”- University of Rome
1980 - 1999 Researcher in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology. School of Pharmacy – University of Catania.
1982 and 1989: Visiting Professor at the Department of Microbiology of the Karolinska Institutet of Stockolm (Sweden).
2000 - 2005 Associate Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology. School of Pharmacy – University of Catania.
Since 2006. Full Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology. School of Pharmacy – Department of Bio-Medical Sciences- University of Catania. Teaching position at the School of Specialization on Microbiology and at the School of Specialization on Hospital Pharmacy – University of Catania. Teaching position at the Research Doctorate in Microbiology and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Catania.

  • Studies of the epidemiology,the pathogenesis and the antibiotic resistance of the main bacterial pathogens of periodontal and respiratory infections,and communitary and nosocomial infections.
  • Immunological studies on the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in septic shock induced by group B streptococcus.
  • Studies on the antimicrobial activity of new antibiotics and plant extracts.
  • Microbiolocical studies on probiotic microrganisms and prebioticts drugs.
