Giuseppe Musumeci was graduated from Catania University (Medical School). He was then awarded in Human Movement Science PhD (doctorate). Also, he carried out his research activity at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (Maryland, USA); the AO Research Institute, Davos (Switzerland); and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Medical University of Graz (Austria).

He is collaborating with several researchers and excellence centres in foreign and Italian universities. He is Principal Investigator or scientific collaborator in a number of Italian and international peer-reviewed research projects. Dr Musumeci has been awarded national and international research prizes. He is a member of different Italian and international association of Anatomy, Histology, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine and Exercise. Since 2002 until today he has been Peer Reviewer in national and international scientific projects form 10 different Countries and European Community and in several international scientific journals (about 130), also he is editor in 12 international journals. Prof. Musumeci has been a speaker and scientific director at several Italian and international meetings and co-author’s in several books manual regarding anatomy, kinesiology and musculoskeletal disorders. Prof. Musumeci has trained numerous Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows.

Currently, he works as Professor of Human Anatomy and Sports Sciences at the Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences, Human Anatomy and Histology Section, School of Medicine, University of Catania, Italy ( His major research interest is on morphological, molecular and biochemical aspects of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal disorders and the relative effects of diet, ageing and physical activity. The others research topic of interest are, tissue engineering with the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells from different sources versus a chondrocyte line for gain more insight into tissue regeneration and provide autologous implants with different types of scaffold materials and the correlation between physical activity, ageing and nutrition. Further areas of interest include cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, neuroscience and cancer. In all his research he studies different aspects of biological, molecular, histological, immunohistochemical, histomorphometrical and microscopical structure and relative histopathology information and new biomarkers discovery.

My training and research activity took place in the Department of Anatomy, Pathology Diagnostics, Forensic Medicine, Hygiene and Public Health of the University of Catania, the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Sussex (UK), the Regency Institut (UK), the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, Maryland (USA), the AO Research Institute, Davos, Switzerland, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Centre of Expertise Laura Bassi, Medical University of Graz, Austria and the Laboratory for Biomechanics and Biomaterials, Hannover Medical School, Germany. I have also worked with other important Italian research groups including sections of Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics and Dentistry of the University of Catania; Occupational Medicine of the Universities of Messina and Ancona; Urology of the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Anatomy of the Universities of Messina, Palermo, Ancona, Brescia and Bologna.

The scientific publications have been carried out making use of a variety of methodologies such as: histology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry with the aid of the optical microscope, Test TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotidyl Transferase Biotin-dUTP Nick End Labeling), immunocytochemistry and immunofluorescence with the aid of the fluorescence microscope, Cell Culture Primary (monolayer and 3D scaffold), Western Blotting, immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting,Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA), X-ray, histomorphometric analysis, Gene Expression (RNA assay), Biochemical Analysis (DNA and GAG assay). The data presented were always backed, where indicated, by appropriate statistical analysis: Student’s t-test and ANOVA for paired and unpaired data, Pearson correlation test and nonparametric tests.

My scientific production ranges in various disciplines related to human anatomy and pathophysiology, including dentistry, dermatology, pharmacology, internal medicine, orthopaedics, exercise physiology, occupational medicine and tissue engineering.

His scientific activity began in the year 2004 and today consists of around 300 scientific peer reviewer contributions.
