The research activity carried out by Prof. Salvatore Giunta is focused on the identification and characterization of proteins involved in the regulation of apoptosis, both in physiological and pathological conditions. Its main research lines are:

Neurodegeneration and brain aging:

- Study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the protective effect of Sildenafil (VIAGRA) on the hippocampus of elderly mice.

- Role of the F3 adhesion / contact molecule in synaptic plasticity and memory in in vivo models of transgenic mice (TAG / F3).

- Anti-inflammatory effect related to the inhibition of the pro-apoptotic cytokine TNFSF10 in animal models of Alzheimer's (3xTg-AD mice).

In vitro models for the study of toxicity of heavy metals:

- Involvement of the protein Mucin 1 (MUC1) in nickel-induced lung carcinogenesis.

- Study of the neuroprotective effect of caffeine associated with the inhibition of the A1 receptor on neuroblastoma cells exposed to Aluminum.

Beneficial effects from physical activity on the main osteoarticular disorders:

- Correlation between physical activity, expression of Lubricin and apoptosis of the articular cartilage.

Diabetes and its complications:

- Role of the heme-oxygenase / biliverdin reductase system in diabetic retinopathy
