Michelangelo Mancuso - University of Pisa & AOUP,  (Italy)

Professor Mancuso has more than 20-years experience on neurology and on treating patients with various neurological diseases, and more than 15-years training experience on EMG/NCS exams and carotid and transcranial Doppler evaluation. Professor Mancuso is the head of the Centre of Neurogenetics and expertise for mitochondrial diseases and rare diseases at the Neurological Clinic of the University Hospital of Pisa (Orphanet Center EUGTIT247621). Mancuso is also a staff-member of the neuromuscular disorder group and physician expertise of the Laboratory of Liquor (CSF) analysis and molecular biology of neurological diseases at the same Institute. Scientific and research activity of Professor Michelangelo Mancuso has mainly been conducted in the field of mitochondrial, neurogenetics (including neuromuscular diseases), neurodegenerative diseases and stroke. Sectors of interest are epidemiological and clinical-molecular correlation studies in muscular pathologies, investigations of genotype-phenotype interrelationships and physiopathology of metabolic alterations in mitochondrial diseases, assessment of biological and genetic markers in cerebellar ataxia, HSP, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and other genetic neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. As a whole result, his research activity has been presented in national and international congresses and published for a number of more than 280 full papers on peer-rewieved Life Science/Current Contents cited scientific journals (available on request). According to Scopus, Dr Mancuso’s articles have more than 14000 citations, and the H-Index is 48. He has edited in 2019 the Springer Book “Diagnosis and Management of Mitochondrial Disorders” (ISBN 978-3-030-05516-5). Professor Mancuso is actively involved in multiple projects mainly focusing on mitochondrial diseases and mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegeneration. He is the Coordinator of the Italian Network of Mitochondrial diseases, Granted by Telethon in 2009, and is also member of the International Consortium of Mitochondrial diseases experts for the development of the International Database for Mitochondrial diseases. Professor Mancuso has coordinated clinical trials on mitochondrial diseases (Tetracycline, published in Acta Neurological Scandinavia journal in 2011; cysteine donor supplementation, published in the Journal of Neurology in 2010), has been invited to published several reviews focusing on mitochondrial therapy (i.e. Drugs and mitochondrial diseases: 40 queries and answers, Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2012), and he has coordinated the international working group on Outcome measures and clinical trial readiness in primary mitochondrial myopathies in children and adults (PMID 29074296). Grants selection: Telethon GUP09004, Telethon GSP09001, RF-2016-02361495 and EJPRD2019 project GENOMIT. Mancuso is the Coordinator of the Neurogenetics Group of the Italian Society of Neurology, co-chair of the EAN Coordinating Panel on Rare Neurological Diseases and past-chair of the Neurogenetics Panel of the European Academy of Neurology. The Neurological Institute where Prof Mancuso is working is member of the ERN NMD (where I’m the vice representative of the HCP), and of the ERN RND (where I am the HCP representative). Recently, Dr Mancuso has been also nominated co-chair of the mitochondrial working group of the ERN NMD, and chair of the inter-ERN mitochondrial working group.. Finally, Professor Mancuso acts as peer- reviewer for numerous scientific journals (including Lancet Neurology, New England Journal of Medicine, Human Molecular Genetics, Neuromuscular disorders, Journal of Neurology, Annals of Neurology, and more) and for several National Research Programme (including the French National Research Agency, Polish National Agency, and more).
