PATOLOGIE DELL'APPARATO LOCOMOTORE E RIABILITAZIONE
Module MALATTIE DELL'APPARATO LOCOMOTORE

Academic Year 2025/2026 - Teacher: GIANLUCA TESTA

Expected Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge and understanding The student must acquire a solid theoretical foundation in:

  • Etiopathogenesis: Understand the causes and mechanisms of development of degenerative (osteoarthritis, osteoporosis) and inflammatory pathologies.

  • Traumatology: Know the classification of fractures, dislocations, and ligamentous injuries, including bone healing.

  • Instrumental Diagnostics: Know the indications and limitations of X-ray (RX), CT, MRI, and bone densitometry (DEXA).

  • Therapeutic Options: Understand the principles of non-operative treatment (casts, braces) and surgical treatment (osteosynthesis, prosthetics).

2. Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Perform the Physical Examination: Identify clinical signs of joint instability, limitation of ROM (Range of Motion), or deformity.

  • Interpret Diagnostics: Correlate radiological findings with the patient's clinical symptoms to formulate a correct diagnosis.

  • Manage Emergencies: Apply first aid protocols in case of trauma (temporary immobilization, neurovascular assessment).

3. Making judgements The student must develop the ability to:

  • Differential Diagnosis: Distinguish between pain of mechanical, inflammatory, or referred origin (e.g., sciatica vs. hip pathology).

  • Therapeutic Choice: Critically evaluate when to opt for surgery versus conservative treatment, considering age and comorbidities (link with Internal Medicine).

  • Prognostication: Estimate recovery times and the risk of complications (pseudoarthrosis/nonunion, infections, avascular necrosis).

  • 4. Communication skills The future professional must be able to:

    ·       Inform about Consent: Explain the risks and benefits of a prosthetic procedure or osteosynthesis, in line with the dictates of Law 219/2017 (Legal Medicine).

    ·       Educate on Rehabilitation: Communicate the importance of early weight-bearing or post-operative restrictions for the success of the treatment.

    ·       Interprofessional Collaboration: Collaborate with physiotherapists and case managers for the patient's functional recovery (link with Neurorehabilitation).

    5. Learning skills The student must acquire the tools to:

    ·       Stay Technologically Updated: Follow the evolution of materials (biomaterials, metal alloys) and minimally invasive techniques (arthroscopy).

    ·       EBM in Orthopedics: Consult prosthesis registries and clinical trials to choose the safest and most effective medical devices.

    ·       Prevention: Integrate orthopedic knowledge with Occupational Medicine to prevent biomechanical overload pathologies.

Course Structure

Frontal lession. Ppt files.

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.

Learning assessment may also be carried out on line, should the conditions require it.

Required Prerequisites

Basis on anatomy, physiology and biomechanics on musculoskeletal system (mandatory).

Attendance of Lessons

Mandatory rate: 50%

Detailed Course Content

The course is based on the main orthopaedic and traumatologic disorders, highlighting: epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, imaging investigations, differential diagnosis, prognosis, complications, conservative and surgical treatment.
