MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY AND ANATOMY OF THE VISUAL SYSTEM
Module MICROBIOLOGIA E MICROBIOLOGIA CLINICA

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: MARIA LINA MEZZATESTA

Expected Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Microbiology course, the student will have acquired fundamental knowledge regarding microorganisms of medical interest, with particular reference to the causative agents of major ocular infections and the microbiological issues relevant to the orthoptist's professional practice.

Knowledge and understanding. The student must be familiar with the fundamental characteristics of the main pathogenic microorganisms, specifically the bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites responsible for ocular infections. The student must understand the primary mechanisms of pathogenicity, modes of infection transmission, and predisposing factors for ocular infections, as well as the fundamental principles of microbiological diagnosis. Furthermore, the student must be familiar with the principles of asepsis, antisepsis, disinfection, and sterilization, along with key infection prevention and control measures, particularly within healthcare settings and procedures.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student must be able to apply microbiological knowledge to the prevention of ocular infections and the proper management of professional procedures. The student must be able to recognize the main modes of microorganism transmission and adopt appropriate behaviors to minimize the risk of contamination and infection during patient care and diagnostic activities. Additionally, the student must understand the principles of collecting and handling biological samples for microbiological analysis and be able to interpret—within the scope of the professional role—the significance of the main microbiological tests used to diagnose ocular infections.

Autonomy of judgment. The student must be able to identify the main microbiological risks associated with healthcare procedures and environments and evaluate the appropriateness of infection prevention and control measures. Furthermore, the student must be able to identify behaviors or conditions that could facilitate the contamination and transmission of microorganisms and adopt suitable preventive strategies, in compliance with established procedures and safety guidelines.

Communication skills. Students must acquire and correctly use specialized terminology related to microbiology and infectious diseases, demonstrating the ability to communicate information regarding ocular infections and prevention strategies clearly and appropriately. They must be able to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare professionals regarding infection prevention procedures and key microbiological issues relevant to ophthalmology.

Learning skills. Students must develop the ability to independently deepen and update their microbiological knowledge by consulting specialized texts, guidelines, and scientific sources. They must acquire the tools necessary to keep their skills up to date in light of evolving knowledge regarding ocular infections, microbiological diagnostic methods, and infection prevention and control strategies in healthcare settings.
