Cesarina Giallongo
Keywords
The research activity of Cesarina Giallongo primarily focuses on the role of the tumor microenvironment in the pathogenesis and progression of hematological malignancies. Her work investigates the complex interactions between malignant cells and the bone marrow niche, with particular attention to tumor-induced immunosuppressive mechanisms and cytokine signaling networks that regulate communication between cancer cells and the stromal compartment.
Another major area of interest involves metabolic alterations within the bone marrow microenvironment and the metabolic reprogramming that supports malignant cell survival and proliferation. Through an integrated molecular and cellular approach, her research aims to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying tumor growth and to identify novel potential therapeutic targets.
Cesarina Giallongo graduated in Biologia Sanitaria from the University of Catania in 2004. She obtained a
Postgraduate Specialization in Clinical Biochemistry from the University of Messina in 2011 and a PhD in Basic
and Applied Biomedical Sciences from the University of Catania in 2017. From 2017 to 2019, she worked as a
postdoctoral researcher at the Division of Hematology, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria "Policlinico - Vittorio
Emanuele", Catania. From April 6, 2020 to April 6, 2025, she served as Assistant Professor of Hematology at the
Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences and Advanced Technologies “G.F. Ingrassia” of the University of
Catania. Starting from September 1, 2025, she has been appointed Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the
Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences of the University of Catania. Her research focuses
primarily on the role of the tumor microenvironment in the pathogenesis and progression of hematological
malignancies. Within this context, she has investigated tumor-induced immunosuppressive mechanisms,
cytokine networks, and metabolic changes in the tumor microenvironment that contribute to the establishment
of a bone marrow niche supporting cancer cell growth and survival. She is the author of 88 peer-reviewed articles
(H-index: 33; total citations: 2.705) and currently serves as a member of editorial boards and associate editor for
high-ranking scientific journals.
