Silvia Vivarelli

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Experimental Medicine and Pathophysiology [MEDS-02/A]

Silvia Vivarelli is a Tenure-Track Researcher (RTT) at the Section of General Pathology, Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences (BIOMETEC), University of Catania, Italy.

Her academic and research career spans Italy and the UK. From 2010 to 2015, she worked at the Gurdon Institute, University of Cambridge, and from 2015 to 2017 she held research positions at MedImmune Ltd and Horizon Discovery Ltd in Cambridge. From 2017 to 2021, she carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Catania. From 2021 to 2026, she was a fixed-term researcher (RTD-A) at the University of Messina.

She earned a degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from the University of Bologna in 2005, cum laude, and a PhD in Translational and Molecular Medicine from the University of Milano-Bicocca (2006–2010). In 2020, she also completed a second-level Master's degree in Nutraceuticals and Gut Microbiota Modulation in Oncology at the University of Catania, cum laude.

Her research focuses on the molecular and pathogenic mechanisms underlying chronic diseases, with a particular interest in cancer. Her work brings together in vitro and ex vivo experimental models, studies involving workers and patients, and computational and biostatistical approaches to investigate disease-associated biological alterations and identify biomarkers of susceptibility, exposure, and effect.

Her studies encompass transcriptional regulation, particularly the transcription factor YY1 and its molecular networks; circadian biology and circadian disruption, with a focus on night shift work and women’s health; microbiota–host interactions and their role in cancer pathogenesis and modulation; environmental and occupational exposures and their molecular effects; and the identification of biomarkers for prevention and early diagnosis.

In 2023, she earned the Italian National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale, ASN), qualifying her for appointment as an Associate Professor in General and Clinical Pathology.

She is the author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, with 57% as first or co-first author and 25% as corresponding author. She regularly presents her research at national and international conferences and scientific meetings, including as an invited speaker, and serves on scientific committees. She also serves as an editor and peer reviewer for international scientific journals.
