Musculoskeletal system diseases and rehabilitation
Module Medical applied technical sciences

Academic Year 2025/2026 - Teacher: GIUSEPPE LANZA

Expected Learning Outcomes

(ACCORDING TO THE 5 DUBLIN DESCRIPTORS)

1. Knowledge and Understanding - The student needs to demonstrate knowledge and understanding the:

- anatomy and physiology of the nervous and muscular system and the main morpho-functional alterations;

- fundamentals of rehabilitation for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders;

- basics of main electrophysiological techniques (electroneurography, electromyography, evoked potentials);

- basics of clinical and instrumental assessment of patients in rehabilitation;

- main diagnostic and prognostic applications of neuromuscular assessment techniques.

2. Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding - The student needs to be able to:

- apply theoretical knowledge to the interpretation of the main electrophysiological tests;

- contribute to the functional assessment of patients with neuromuscular and muscular disorders;

- use clinical and instrumental data to support rehabilitation planning;

- integrate anatomical and physiological information with the results of different diagnostic tests;

- collaborate with the multi-professional team in managing the patient's rehabilitation process.

3. Independent judgment - The student needs to demonstrate the following:

- critically evaluate the clinical and instrumental information available;

- recognize the main neuromuscular pathological conditions of relevance to rehabilitation;

- identify intervention priorities based on functional assessments;

- make professional choices consistent with scientific evidence and rehabilitation plan;

- reflect on the ethical, deontological, and organizational aspects of physiotherapy practice.

4. Communication skills - The student needs to be able to:

- use appropriate technical and scientific language in the rehabilitation and electrophysiological field;

- communicate clearly and effectively with the patient, family members, and healthcare professionals;

- illustrate the results of functional and instrumental assessments in relation to rehabilitation goals;

- actively participate in the work of the multidisciplinary team, enhancing the role of the physiotherapist;

- adapt communication methods to the clinical and cognitive conditions of the patient to be treated.

5. Learning skills - The student needs to demonstrate:

- independent learning and review of neuromuscular rehabilitation content;

- ability to continuously update assessment and treatment techniques;

- critically review scientific literature, guidelines, and clinical recommendations;

- integration of new knowledge into professional physiotherapy practice.

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

Oral exam. Elements to be evaluated: relevance of the answers, quality of their contents, ability to connect with other topics within the program, ability to report examples, quality of technical language, and overall expressive ability.

To guarantee equal opportunities and in compliance with current laws, students can request a meeting in order to plan any compensatory and/or dispensatory measure, according to the educational goals and specific needs. In this case, it is advisable to contact the CInAP (Centre for Active and Participated Integration - Services for Disabilities and/or SLD) professor of the Department where the Degree Course is included.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

What do the somatosensory evoked potentials evaluate and when would you request them?

What is the difference between electroneurography and electromyography?

What are the main clinical and rehabilitative applications of the motor evoked potentials?
