Giovanni Luca Romano

Fixed-term Assistant Professor (RTDA) of Pharmacology [BIO/14]

Dr. Romano is a Researcher of Pharmacology section - School of Medicine - University of Catania, in 2022 he obtained the national scientific qualification as Associate Professor.

He own a pharmaceutical background (MS in Pharmacy) and a PhD in Neuroscience, that reflects expertise in the field of Ocular Pharmacology research and excellent skills in the management of animal models.

From 2016 to 2019 he covered the Staff Associate Research position in Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Along this period he gained good abilities in the execution of electrophysiology experiments of the visual pathway (ERG, VEP) in animal models (mice, rats, rabbits and monkeys) together with imaging technique (OCT) and histology (IHC). He provided an important contribution to the acquisition of data using the PERG system that represents a key tool for the assessment of retinal ganglion cells function in this proposal. In addition, he has good expertise in animal husbandry, brain surgery, in-vivo imaging, and ex-vivo immunohistochemistry/protein expression.

Since 2015 he is member of several scientific societies: Italian Society of Pharmacology (SIF), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and Association for Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics (AOPT) and owner of various grants and scholarships for research projects abroad.
