ALIMENTAZIONE E NUTRIZIONE NELLE FASI DELLA VITA

Academic Year 2022/2023 - Teacher: GIUSEPPE GROSSO

Expected Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to define nutritional requirements in the various stages of life cycle, such as infancy, childhood and adolescence, adulthood, oldness, and pregnancy/lactating women; provide health recommendations; and recognize early and late life consequences of inadequate nutrient intake.

Course Structure

Frontal lessons. Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.

To guarantee equal opportunities and in compliance with the actual regulation, students can ask for a personal interview in order to plan compensatory and / or dispensatory requests, based on the didactic objectives and specific needs.

It is also possible to contact the Department CInAP (Center for Active and Participated Integration - Services for Disabilities and / or SLD) referee.

Required Prerequisites

Students should know the basic principles of human nutrition, the role of macro- and micronutrients, and the relation between the major food groups and human health.

Attendance of Lessons

Optional, but highly recommended.

Detailed Course Content

During the lectures the following arguments will be discussed:

  • introduction to the concepts, definitions and approaches used to define nutritional needs and recommendations in context of life cycle stages;
  • evidence used for making recommendations;
  • recommended dietary intakes according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Reference nutrient and energy intake levels for Italian population (LARN).
  • nutrition during infancy, childhood and adolescence: nutritional requirements with focus on child development issues;
  • nutrition during adulthood: focus on prevention of non-communicable diseases (including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases);
  • nutrition in elderly: how to meet the nutritional needs of older people;
  • nutrition during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding): nutritional recommendations, focus on maternal diet (nutrients, food and dietary patterns) and infant’s health outcomes (including preterm birth, being small for gestational age, fetal size and weight, neuro-development);
  • health consequence of inadequate nutrient intake during the life cycle.
