EMATOLOGIA MOLECOLARE E SPERIMENTALE

Academic Year 2022/2023 - Teacher: ALESSANDRA ROMANO

Expected Learning Outcomes

Acquisition of the basic knowledge necessary for the choice and use of pre-clinical animal models of neoplastic haemopathies. Acquisition of the basic knowledge necessary for the understanding and application of the technologies necessary for the in vitro and ex vivo manipulation of human lymphocytes for the generation of TILs and CAR-T.

At the end of the course, students will be able to choose and develop the most suitable preclinical model for understanding the pathophysiological basis of haematological neoplasms, with particular reference to pathologies currently considered incurable (multiple myeloma and acute myeloid leukemia).

Course Structure

After a general overview of the mechanisms that regulate normal and pathological hematopoiesis, the student will be introduced to the definition and pathophysiology of the main diseases affecting red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. A special attention will be paid to the most common forms of anemia and the most frequent hematological neoplasms. Priority will be given to the notions providing a general framework of the hematological patient and the current prospects for cure or control of the disease, with a special mention for the most modern therapeutic strategies used in hematology, including the basics of cellular therapy and bone marrow transplantation.

Required Prerequisites

According to Regolamento di Ateneo. Basic knowledge of the HLA system, pathophysiology of chronic and neoplastic inflammation processes, anatomy of the immune system is suggested.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is highly recommended due to the interactive nature of the lessons.

Detailed Course Content

Through the discussion of the most recent scientific articles, examples of application of the most advanced biotechnologies in the field of onco-haematological research for the application of cell therapy and gene therapies will be proposed.
